Guildford Tchoukball Club beat Bury St Edmunds for the first time this weekend - winning the inaugural Tchoukball UK Challenge Cup competition in Norwich.
In a closely-fought match, Guildford led by four-to-five points throughout with Bury taking the lead in the final third. But it was intelligent shooting by the underdogs that secured them their first ever win over Bury 45-43.
Guildford's captain, Rob Ellis, praised his team's performance:
"We've been chipping away at Bury's dominance for years so it's great to finally get a result. It was a closely-fought match but we played smart and defended well - which ultimately made the difference. Guildford will now use this as a spring board for National League."
Following a strong performance at this month's National League, the GB U18 squad again impressed senior competitors and spectators. Despite losing their matches to more experienced opposition, they pushing every team to the final whistle. A combination of some of the best defensive play on the day, and determination, meant they performed well and demonstrated they'll be a strong force at the World Youth Championships in Austria next year.
Leeds Met Carnegie's team, the majority of whom had only been playing tchoukball for a year, rose to the challenge of senior tchoukball competition. They draw 36-36 with university rivals Southampton and only narrowly lost 39 - 38 to Broadland.
GB Women and Southampton University played the tightest match of the day which ended with a 38-38 draw. Both sides played excellent defending games with touches of brilliance from their attacking players.
The final ranking on the day was:
1) Guildford
2) Bury St Edmunds
3) Broadland
4) Great Britain Women
5) Southampton University
6) Leeds Met Carnegie
7) Great Britain U18s
